AWF's Covid-19 Safety Protocols
AWF’s top priority is the health and safety of our volunteers, and we are committed to meeting or exceeding all guidelines issued by the New Mexico Department of Health (https://cv.nmhealth.org/public-health-orders-and-executive-orders/) and the CDC (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/) with regard to the COVID-19 pandemic.

AWF is implementing the following safety protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19 during our volunteer restoration service projects (click here to download these protocols as a pdf document):
General Guidelines
- If you are a member of a group that is at high risk of developing serious complications from COVID-19, or if you live with or are in close contact with highly vulnerable individuals, we encourage you to consider refraining from participating in any activities outside your home at this time, including AWF projects.
- A day or so before the project begins, we will ask you to complete a survey evaluating whether you and everyone in your household are healthy. (If this is not the case, we will advise you not to participate in the project.)
- Do not come to a project if you are sick. If you have experienced any symptoms of illness within the past 14 days – including fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chills, muscle pain, or loss of taste or smell – or if you have been exposed to someone with any of these symptoms within the past 14 days, do not come to the project.
- We encourage you to consider getting tested for COVID-19 shortly before coming out on a project.
Preparing for the Project
- Bring a cloth mask or bandana and work gloves with you to the project. (AWF will have extra bandanas and gloves available).
- Carefully read the Directions and Details email that we will send you the week before the project for any additional safety protocols or other important information.
At the Campsite
- AWF will have bleach wipes or spray available at the porta-potty. We ask that you wipe down the door handles and any other surfaces you touch with bleach before and after you use the porta-potty.
- AWF will provide multiple touchless handwashing stations. We encourage you to wash your hands often, especially after using the porta-potty or touching any surface that might have been touched by others.
- AWF will have bleach wipes or spray available in the camp kitchen area and will frequently wipe down kitchen surfaces with bleach.
- There will not be any potluck food at projects, in order to avoid having multiple people touch utensils and serving dishes. This means we will be asking you to bring more of your own food than usual.
- Bring your own water and water bottle, and be sure to mark your water bottle so that you can easily identify it.
- If AWF provides coffee for volunteers, only one person will touch the coffeepots in order to avoid having multiple people touch the same surfaces.
- If AWF provides breakfast and/or dinner, those meals will be provided as single-serving portions. AWF will not provide plates, bowls, or utensils to volunteers at this time.
- We ask that you stay at least six feet away from other volunteers during any socializing before and after the project workday. When sitting at camp, be sure your chairs are located at least six feet apart. Space out tents as much as possible, but at least six feet apart.
- Please wear a cloth mask or bandana as much as possible when at camp.
During the Project Work
- No more than two people will be permitted to work on a structure together if the activity is high-risk. If the activity is low-risk, no more than five people will be allowed to work on a structure together.
- While working on structures, keep at least six feet between you and anyone not in your household.
- Wear a cloth mask or bandana as much as possible, but especially whenever you are close to other volunteers.
- Wear gloves throughout the day, especially when touching any tool or other surface that may be touched by others.
- Wash or sanitize your hands often, and try not to touch your face.
After the Project
- If you experience any COVID-19 symptoms or test positive for COVID-19 within 14 days after participating in an AWF project, please notify us immediately at abqwildlifefederation@gmail.com
